Firecracker 5K

Last Wednesday (July 4th), I ran in the Cadillac Firecracker 5K at the Maryland Farms YMCA in Brentwood, TN. This was my first race since I injured my left IT band, and it went very well. I set a PR of 25:51, which was 51 seconds faster than my previous 5K PR.

My left ITB still requires some stretching and warmup, so I got to the race an hour early and started running. I first ran a 2M warmup by myself and then took a 15 minute break. Then I ran a 1.2M warmup with a friend, and we finished about 10 minutes before race time.

The warmups helped me a lot because I felt good throughout the race, and I was able to keep a consistent pace. In past runs I haven't warmed up at all, and the first mile or two always felt terrible. This time I was ready to go. The extra warmup miles didn't take anything away from me, and my muscles and joints were able to handle the race pace well.

It seems like all the physical therapy is paying off. My injury is manageable if I stretch and warmup correctly, and I haven't lost any speed or endurance. Now I just need to keep training smart for the fall half-marathons.

My official results from the Firecracker 5K are:

Gun Time: 26:35
Chip Time: 25:51
Pace: 8:21
Overall Place: 431 out of 1228
Sex Place: 346
Age Group Place (Male 35-39): 66 out of 122
Bib Number: 22
